Sometimes you need a hug, and sometimes the softest bed sheets are just as good, if not better. Bedrooms are often referred to as sanctuaries, so it is no wonder that outfitting your bed with the best sheets is a path to serenity while you sleep.

AD editors know that ending the day with high-quality bedding is a worthwhile investment. We’ve put on Sleep Week for the last five years to prove it, spotlighting our team’s favorite essentials to get a good night’s rest. We have tested dozens of reputable brands, including Brooklinen and Boll & Branch, and slumbered in true luxury sheets from Frette and Matouk. That said, we didn’t forget budget-friendly bedding from Quince and Amazon best sellers with special qualities like temperature regulation. Here, 15 of the softest sheets that will convince you that crawling into bed at 9 p.m. is equivalent to self-care.

If anyone can vet for the Boll & Branch Signature cotton sateen sheets, it’s commerce director Rachel Fletcher, who has had this supremely soft bedding for at least five years. “That extra-soft feel paired with the lovely, cooling properties make them feel like the luxury sheets that they are,” she says in her best sheets review.

Contributor Yelena Alpert, who has at least three cotton sateen sheets in her linen closet, can’t help but gush over her piped edge style that adds just enough interest to the creamy colorway. “I wanted something for transitional weather and these absolutely deliver,” Alpert says. “The texture is something like whipped butter, especially after laundering. You’ll find subtle creases on the material, but that only makes these look more romantic.” While these are not inexpensive, the set can be used all year and is an investment, and you can request free swatches before committing. “I don’t see these leaving my bedroom trousseau in the near future,” Alpert says.

The Matouk Bergamo fitted sheet may look simple, but the airy percale is as soft as silk—all thanks to a unique combination of Giza 87 and 92 Egyptian cotton yarns. Allie Weiss, contributor, calls it the cream-of-the-crop bedding. “I hate scratchy sheets, and breathed a sigh of relief when I slipped into these,” she says. “They are both lightweight, crisp looking, and soft to the touch—talk about a win-win.”

Silky Bamboo Sheets

100% viscose from organic bamboo

Leave it to Quince, a beloved AD brand for all things bedding, to offer organic bamboo sheets that feel like a decadent cocoon. “This set feels smooth and cool to the touch but still cozy enough to bundle up with during the winter months,” says Baker, who has the brand’s sheets in a warm hue that evokes earthy desert tones and transforms her bedroom into a serene escape. That’s one reason these sheets ended up as a top pick on our best bamboo sheets list. What’s more, the 300 thread count sheet set is also hypoallergenic.

Brooklinen Classic Percale Core Sheet Set

  • King and California king sets include king-size pillowcases

Material

100% long-staple cotton, 270 thread count

The Brooklinen percale core set may be known to keep hot sleepers comfortable, but the matte finish of these sheets, made with long-staple cotton fibers is ridiculously smooth. “Usually, percale cotton is just airy, but these sheets are light but actually feel as if they cameo as something like sateen,” says Alpert, who tested these in the blue Oyster pattern. “I love them so much that I got the duvet cover in the same material and now my bed is this oasis of softness.” The magic sauce lies in Brooklinen using long-staple cotton, which keeps the fibers from fraying and feeling rough.

For Hot Sleepers

Upsides & Downsides

Upsides

  • 13 colors available
  • Option with or without flat sheet
  • Feels buttery to the touch

Downsides

  • Can snag if washed with items that contain zippers

Size Options

Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king

What’s Included

(1) fitted sheet, (1) optional flat/top sheet, and (2) pillowcases. Twin and twin XL sets include (1) pillowcase

Material

100% Tencel lyocell (eucalyptus fibers)

For tester Mel Studach, AD PRO senior editor, sheet fabric “has to be ultra-soft” and the Sijo AiryWeight eucalyptus sheet set reminds her of a favorite silk shirt that is “airy and comfortable yet elegant.” Studach uses these year-round because they feel lightweight and breathable in the summer and still cozy under a down comforter in the winter. “I’ve certainly noticed a less humid sleep experience in comparison to my past sheet sets,” she says.

Alpert is all about the grey stripe colorway, which can go coastal or cottagecore. “The petal-like Tencel lyocell material has the grace of a ballet dancer and the barely-there weight works wonderfully with my Ostermoor down duvet,” Alpert explains. “It’s the perfect combo for anyone who wants to feel comforted without getting tangled in their bedding.” Commerce producer Lauren Arzbaecher adds that while she recently become a fan of bamboo sheets, “eucalyptus might be my new favorite for summer sheeting” because of how “silky and light” it feels every night.

A T-Shirt-Inspired Set

Parachute Brushed Cotton Fitted Sheet

Upsides & Downsides

Upsides

  • Oeko-Tex Standard 100
  • 60 days to return
  • Sturdy feel

Downsides

  • Compared to other sheets, limited colorway (6)

Size Options

Full, queen, king, California king

What’s Included

1 fitted sheet

Material

100% cotton

The Parachute brushed cotton fitted sheet has over 850 five-star reviews, and for good reason. This durable bedding is comforting thanks to its plain weave construction that’s a cross between cozy cotton sheets and your favorite t-shirt. “There’s no stretchy action like you might expect with sheets of a lesser quality,” says Fletcher. They’re also made in Portugal, which is known for producing excellent linens, and the factory that Parachute works with has been family-owned for generations, adds Fletcher, who originally tested the organic fitted sheet.

Softest Flannel Sheets

  • Life Unscripted Photography

Serena & Lily Belvedere Flannel Sheet Set

Upsides & Downsides

Upsides

  • Six colorways
  • Oeko-Tex certified
  • Fitted sheet suits 16-inch mattresses

Downsides

  • More expensive than some other options on this list

Size Options

Twin, full, queen, king, California king

What’s Included

  • 1 flat sheet, 1 fitted sheet, 2 pillowcases
  • Twin set includes 1 pillowcase
  • King sets include 2 king pillowcases

Material

100% brushed cotton flannel

Unlike percale or bamboo bedding, which can actually feel cold in the winter months, this flannel is a welcome embrace. “It’s so cold in Cleveland they cancelled school because of negative degree weather, but I would never know it because these sheets are cozier than my puffiest winter coat,” Alpert says. “Some flannel sheets can lose their plushness factor after a while, but the Serena & Lily Belvedere is as velveteen as it was when I first put them on my bed. I’ve been using these for two months now and love them even more than I did on day one.” The gingham colorways—chambray, doe, and pistachio—are also a nice reminder that spring is just around the corner. All you need is a cup of tea in bed, and you may never leave your bedroom.

More AD-Approved Soft Bed Sheets

Frette Divine Sheet Set

Upsides & Downsides

Upsides

  • Fits well on mattresses
  • Polished look
  • The linen sateen finish gives them a smooth feel

Downsides

  • More expensive than some other options on this list
  • Care instructions recommend skipping tumble drying
  • Only available in white colorway

Size Options

Queen, king, California king

What’s Included

1 top sheet, 1 bottom sheet, and a pair of shams

Material

100% linen sateen

The Italian heritage brand Frette knows a thing or two about luxe bedding, and the Divine sheet set is no different. Unlike expected pillow cases, these come with a sham-like design. “The thick border around the pillowcases in particular gives the pillows a little bit more structure so they don’t slouch,” says Nashia Baker, senior commerce editor. The bedding is the epitome of quiet luxury as there is a subtle wrinkle that makes this linen sateen set casual, yet still refined. Baker adds that the bedding is not only airy but also softer than other linen varieties she has tested. “The thickness of the bedding is also unique to me,” she continues. “These feel like they have way more threads but still have a lofty nature to them to prevent night sweats.”

Brooklinen Heathered Cashmere Core Sheet Set

Upsides & Downsides

Upsides

  • A mix of soft, light, and warm
  • Oeko-Tex certified
  • “Long” and “Short” side tags

Full, queen, king, California king

What’s Included

  • 1 flat sheet, 1 fitted sheet, 2 pillowcases
  • King sets include 2 king pillowcases

Material

95% Cotton and 5% Himalayan Cashmere

When bedding has “cashmere” in its name, you know you’re in for a treat. “I was expecting something more like flannel sheets, but the Brooklinen Heathered Cashmere set is actually incredibly light,” Apert says. “When I was laying out the flat sheet, sunlight streamed right through it.” Yet, the bedding is cozy as it is delicate. The heathered diagonal weave also gives it added dimension so that even a classic cream hue has more depth on your bed.

Piglet in Bed Mix-and-Match Linen Bundle

Upsides & Downsides

Upsides

  • Breathable and thermoregulating
  • Prewashed for extra softness
  • Mix-and-match options

Downsides

  • Popular colorways sell out quickly

Size Options

Twin, full, queen, king, California king

What’s Included

  • 1 flat sheet, 1 fitted sheet, 2 pillowcases
  • King sets include 2 king pillowcases

Material

55% European flax and 45% long staple cotton

When it comes to linen bedding, Alpert considers herself somewhat of a pro—she has tested more than five different brands in the last year. The weight of the Piglet in Bed linen-blend is slightly denser than their regular linen, but that brushed feel is what adds to the extra softness factor. “I don’t love overly thin sheets, and these are just right,” says Alpert in her best sheets review. “Think of these linen-blend as cotton sheets that have seen the best of times; they feel lived-in, like you’re sleeping in a nest.” Currently, the linen-blend sage gingham bedding is 30% off and you get an extra 15% off when you bundle three or more pieces.

Rifle Paper Co. Peacock Sateen Bed Sheet Set

Upsides & Downsides

  • Oeko-Tex Standard 100
  • Fitted sheets accommodate mattresses of up to 18 in. deep
  • Pairs with matching duvet cover, comforter, shams and shower curtain (sold separately)

  • 1 flat sheet, 1 fitted sheet, and 2 standard pillowcases
  • Twin sets include 1 pillowcase
  • King sets include king-size pillowcases

Material

100% combed cotton sateen, 300 thread count

Super soft sheets tend to come in more traditional patterns and solid colorways—not the ones from the Company Store x Rifle Paper Co. “I was originally drawn to the peacock print because it is just so whimsical and livens up my guest bedroom,” says Alpert, who has them in queen size. “But these are also buttery soft. Maybe too soft—my guests never want to leave.” The higher thread count, 300, is surely part of the reason. If it wasn’t for the true-to-Rifle print, you’d think these are hotel sheets.

Material

100% CleanBamboo Lyocell (organic, FSC-certified bamboo)

More than 5,000 customers gave the Ettitude CleanBamboo sheet sets a five-star rating and for good reason, these silky smooth sheets are worth the hype. "These sheets are buttery—pun intended,” says Baker, who has the set in the Butter colorway. “Sinking into these sheets is a dream thanks to their glossy feel that rivals the best silk sheets out there. It also doesn't hurt that the set comes in a warm yellow hue, which just so happens to be my favorite color!" The company makes the sheets in Peru and focuses on sustainability—the bedding is made from FSC-certified bamboo.

Material

100% viscose from bamboo

Commerce editor Audrey Lee is a “big fan” of her Cozy Earth cooling bamboo-viscose sheets. According to the brand, bamboo viscose fibers are more hollow than cotton, allowing more air (and heat from your body) to pass through while you sleep. The sets are more generous in size so sleeping in these might be akin to swimming in a pool of soft decadence. Bonus: If you buy these directly from Amazon, they will ship for free. Alpert has tried the bamboo sheet set in the Baha Stripe and believes the bedding feels like you’re swimming in the gentle waves.

Peacock Alley Clara Sateen Sheet Set

The Peacock Alley Clara sateen sheets are a best seller thanks to their reputation for silky soft long-staple cotton. While the set only comes in four colorways—white, ivory, blush, and dark grey—these are a solid option for a classic bedscape, especially since this silhouette sports a hemstitch detail on the pillowcase covers and flat sheet.

How We Tested the Softest Bed Sheets

Part of the job for AD editors and contributors involves testing out products first hand—including bedding. As a result, we are able to compare the bedding side by side to see which sateen feels more plush, whether the percale sheet set is more crisp or has a buttery finish, and see if the performance sheets with cooling properties actually work. For this roundup, we looked at materials that range from organic cotton, bamboo and eucalyptus fibers, and linen. We’ve included soft and warm materials for cold seasons like cashmere and flannel too.

For the softest bed sheets, we did more than look at swatches. Editors and contributors compare dozens of sets and look for qualities such as softness, durability, breathability, color fastness, and how well the linens launder and withstand wear.

And, yes, we actually sleep on all the sheets we feature in our roundups. And often, the testing goes on for months (and in some cases years!).
