What’s your bedroom design, and how does this storage bed align with your aesthetic? The bedroom is a large mid-century modern and minimalist space with lots of natural light and requires large pieces of furniture to match the scale of the room, which this bed frame provides. The subtle color shade of the fabric and the wingback design of the headboard fit perfectly with the natural light and the high ceilings to make a relaxing and inviting bedroom.

Did the bed frame live up to your expectations? The fully upholstered and cushioned frame with its neutral fabric creates a very cozy and relaxing sleeping environment, the scale of the headboard provides the statement that I had hoped for, and the overall quality of the bed is high. The three storage drawers are very spacious and easy to access, providing me with a significant amount of extra storage.

How would you rate the sturdiness of this bed frame on a scale of 1-10? Eight out of 10. The frame is very sturdy. The slats are thick wood, providing a very stable and solid base for the mattress and brace for the bed frame, which both increases the comfort level and provides a sturdy structure with very little movement—something that has previously been an issue with other king bed frames I have owned. There is a slight misalignment of the drawers, not noticeable with a mattress and bedding.

Would you recommend this bed frame to a friend? Yes, I would recommend this frame with a few reservations. It is very functional; providing a large amount of storage, it is a comfortable and sturdy bed frame. The fabric is of good quality matching the colorway shown online with the look of linen despite being predominantly durable polyester. The reservations would be the assembly time, which is significantly more that other bed frames I have had and a slight misalignment of the side drawers—which is not noticeable once the bed is made.

Overall, it represents good value for money given size, comfort, and the aesthetic it provides.

Article Kayra Storage Bed

Specs

  • Sizes available: Queen, King
  • Colors available: Ivory bouclé
  • Storage type: Drawers at the side of the bed
  • Materials: Polyester blend fabric
  • Weight capacity: 600 pounds (including mattress)

Editor’s Note: The Article Cigar bed frame we originally tested is no longer in stock, but the Kayra upholstered storage bed maintains the same feel, look, and storage options of the Cigar model.

Bed frame reviewer: Lisa Aiken, senior vice president of commerce at Condé Nast

What attracted you to this bed frame? The minimalist aesthetic of the fully upholstered frame, combined with the practicality of the spacious and discreet built-in storage drawer located at the foot of the bed frame is what appealed to me most. Additionally, having read about the extensive fabric testing conducted by Article to ensure abrasion resistance (150% more testing than industry standard!), I was reassured that this would be an excellent investment piece for our home.

What was the delivery and assembly like? The white glove delivery service was very good. The third party delivery company called to arrange a suitable date and to confirm if a certificate of insurance was needed. They then texted a four-hour delivery window the day before arrival. Two movers brought the bed frame directly to the guest bedroom and confirmed where it was to be positioned before rapidly assembling it (within 30 minutes of arrival) before removing all packaging and garbage. They also pointed out a small scuff mark on the headboard, which I had not noticed myself, took a picture of this and fully explained the process if I wished to have the headboard replaced.

Are there any standout features? The subtle shade of the ivory textured fabric creates a luxurious yet minimalist feel for the guest bedroom, and the built-in storage drawer—which is spacious yet very discrete—allows for easy storage of spare bedding for different seasons without spoiling the overall aesthetic of the bed frame or the room.

What’s your bedroom design, and how does this storage bed align with your aesthetic? Our guest bedroom is a relaxed mid-century modern design with high ceilings and abundant natural light. The design and upholstery of this bed frame perfectly complements the overall minimalist bedroom design, providing a subtle yet elevated focal point in the room.

Did the bed frame live up to your expectations? So far, yes! The size of the frame is perfect for a smaller guest bedroom with the storage drawer being at the base of the bed, maximizing the shape of the room. The frame is very supportive, creating a firm and perfectly fitting base for the mattress. And the fabric texture is soft to the touch.

How would you rate the sturdiness of this bed frame on a scale of 1-10? Excellent, 10 out of 10. The frame is rock solid due to it being in full contact with the floor rather than on legs, and the headboard is firmly secured with no movement when getting into and out of the bed.

Would you recommend this bed frame to a friend? Yes! This frame looks and feels high-end while maintaining a minimalist aesthetic that can blend into different interior styles. The built-in storage is spacious and discreet, making it perfect for smaller spaces such as guest bedrooms and apartments.

Thuma Classic Underbed Drawer

Specs

  • Sizes available: One size
  • Colors available: Walnut, espresso, natural, grey
  • Storage type: Underbed storage drawer
  • Materials: 100% upcycled wood
  • Weight capacity: N/A

Bed frame reviewer: Zoë Sessums, contributor

What attracted you to this bed frame? I have a small house and I am constantly rearranging rooms, so I was drawn to the easy assembly and disassembly potential of the Thuma bed. I wanted to be able to set up the frame, take it apart, move it around, and do that repeatedly. Plus, I like how clean the lines are and how versatile the style is. With the drawer component, I loved that I can easily move these around too. They are perfect for storing extra bedding like sheets, pillows, and duvets.

What was the delivery and assembly like? Everything came in a manageable sized box so I could unpack and assemble the bed and drawers quickly and without stress. The drawers simply needed to be unboxed and placed under the frame. Honestly, I think the hardest part is breaking down the cardboard.

Are there any standout features? I think the fact that the bed requires no tools for assembly is a pro for most. No need to keep track of your Allen keys or dread a move. The fact that you can now add integrated underbed storage is even better. The drawers have wheels so they slide seamlessly on the floor and the whole process is easy and enjoyable.

What’s your bedroom design, and how does this storage bed align with your aesthetic? My bedroom design is minimalist. I like to have little distractions and clutter in the sleeping sanctuary—I try to channel sleek, Scandinavian sensibilities. The storage is great for keeping things organized and out of sight. I like how the simple design blends right in with the bedframe.

Did the bed frame live up to your expectations? Please describe your sleep experience with this bed frame. I’ve had my Thuma frame for years now and it’s held up wonderfully with moves, room changes, and many restful nights. The frame provides great structure and comfort. The drawers are a new added bonus. I predict they will hold up as well as the frame.

How would you rate the sturdiness of this bed frame on a scale of 1–10? An 8.5.

Would you recommend this bed frame to a friend? Ten thousand percent. This bed frame will hold up and you can add several drawers for added storage.

The Best Upholstered Storage Bed

Saatva Halle Storage Platform Bed Frame

Specs

  • Sizes available: Queen, King, Cal King
  • Colors available: Taupe, graphite, natural linen, pewter linen
  • Storage type: Interior storage with hydraulic lift
  • Materials: Kiln-dried hardwood, linen blend fabric
  • Weight capacity: 300-500 pounds per side

Bed frame reviewer: Kate McGregor, commerce market editor

What attracted you to this bed frame?

Like any girl living in New York in their mid-twenties, I have a lot of stuff. And while I have ample closet space (a rarity), I like a certain level of type-A organization. Closed or hidden storage is key, and I didn’t want to fill my precious closet space with off-season sweaters and formalwear I reach for once a year. Enter: a platform storage bed. Not taking up any extra square footage was key, or else I would have bought a trunk or bookcase like my mother suggested. I had several coworkers who swore by Saatva’s mattresses for both quality and comfort, so investing in their furniture felt like a natural next step. The Halle bed frame is one of their more minimal silhouettes that I knew would suit my ever-evolving design style.

What was the delivery and assembly like?

Delivery and assembly was a breeze. The team gave me an hour's notice before arriving, so I could prep my space (aka move my Amazon bed frame out of the way and vacuum). Assembly took about an hour, and the three-man team were incredibly efficient. They checked in with me multiple times throughout the process to ensure they got the placement exactly right. Afterward, they left with all the trash and packaging in tow, and they even helped me place my 130 lb mattress back onto the new frame.

Are there any standout features?

The lift mechanism is really much smoother than I'd expected. Durable linen handles ensure that I'm never fighting for grip on the base. If I'm really feeling it, I can lift the base with one hand to access the storage below.

What’s your bedroom design, and how does this storage bed align with your aesthetic?

My bedroom is quite minimal—jute rug, dark wood dresser, cream linen curtains. I change my bedding at every whim, so I wanted a bed frame that wouldn't take up too much attention from my gingham sheets and block-printed quilt. The beige linen frame does just that, it serves as a neutral backdrop for whatever bedding layers I choose.

Did the bed frame live up to your expectations?

Yes, and then some. Over the last eight months, this bed has remained sturdy, and without being too dramatic, it has revolutionized my apartment’s storage. Christmas garlands, high heels, and even craft supplies have all found a home in the spacious cavity. Plus, the raised base keeps all of my belongings off the ground. The linen fabric has softened a bit with age, especially on the headboard and handles that I’m touching more frequently than the frame. The lift mechanisms are easy to use and lock while lifted, allowing me to maneuver in the storage space without holding the bed up. The lift even handles my 150-pound mattress with ease, not even creasing a pillow.

How would you rate the sturdiness of this bed frame on a scale of 1–10?

The sturdiness is a 9/10—I dock it a point only because I pushed my bed frame and it shifted a bit away from the storage base. Otherwise, there's no movement, creaking, or stability issues, even as I toss and turn.

Would you recommend this bed frame to a friend?

Absolutely. This bed is a major investment, I won’t lie. But I don’t plan on needing a different bed frame anytime soon (maybe ever), so the longevity of this bed is well worth the price point.

Sundays Cloud Bed with Storage

Specs

  • Sizes available: Full, Queen, King
  • Colors available: Boucle, latte, stone
  • Storage type: Interior storage with hydraulic lift
  • Materials: Cream Bouclé fabric
  • Weight capacity: Mattress: 130 pounds

Bed frame reviewer: Nashia Baker, senior commerce editor

What attracted you to this bed frame? My dream bedroom has always consisted of soft fabrics to welcome a cozy feel to the space. Historically though, I have always had wooden or metal bed frames. Since I live in New York City, I've also craved a storage bed to help tuck away my thick duvet inserts and covers (I’m a design editor, so I own a lot of bedding!) and other bedding depending on the season. This beautiful bed frame has checked all of the boxes for me with its soft yet durable bouclé fabric and huge underbed storage space. If that wasn’t enough already, it serves as an extension of the decor in my bedroom.

What was the delivery and assembly like? The white glove delivery and assembly was incredibly seamless. It was a two-person job, but it was a fast process. It took about one hour or so to get everything built. After being pieced together, the team shared some quick pointers on how to use the hydraulic lift system—which includes compression springs at the base that allows me to lift up the mattress using the bed frame’s two included straps.

Are there any standout features? As mentioned, the hydraulic lift system is very useful. There are two straps I need to grab hold of and lift to access the spacious storage area underneath my mattress. I mainly use the underbed storage to hold all of my bedding, but it's large enough to hold bigger items like a carry-on suitcase.

What’s your bedroom design, and how does this storage bed align with your aesthetic? My bedroom design is a mix between modern and Mediterranean on most days. I love elements that blend both warm, light colors with clean lines, so this storage bed felt like a no brainer for me. It perfectly complements other elements in my space while still serving as a standout piece of decor.

Did the bed frame live up to your expectations? Please describe your sleep experience with this bed frame. My sleep has been even more peaceful with this storage bed. Since my mattress sits on top of wood slats, I wondered if they would be sturdy enough to keep the bed still. I couldn’t be more satisfied with its durability! I also like having my bed sit lower to the ground so I can quite literally roll out of bed and start my day.

How would you rate the sturdiness of this bed frame on a scale of 1–10? Ten. It has been stable since day one with no issues with shifting throughout the night as I sleep.

Would you recommend this bed frame to a friend? Absolutely! Living in NYC, you can never really have too much storage. I recommend this to anyone who is short on closet space. Fair warning: I like a pretty full bed setup (I love a good mattress topper!), so extras added on top of the bed can make the hydraulic system a bit heavier to lift. All in all, I'm loving this bed frame and can't wait to see how it holds up for years to come.

Allewie Hydraulic Lift Storage Bed

Specs

  • Sizes available: Full, Queen, King
  • Colors available: 7
  • Storage type: Interior storage with hydraulic lift
  • Materials: Fabric, iron, and wood
  • Weight capacity: 800

Bed frame reviewer: Will Porter, contributor

What attracted you to this bed frame? I’ve been wanting to try out a bed with an integrated headboard for a while. I saw this one and, for the price, I knew it was well worth giving a go. Plus, the massive amount of underbed storage was going to be clutch, and since you have to lift the mattress to get into the storage, I thought it’d keep my cat from digging around down there.

What was the delivery and assembly like? It came in a pretty big box, but my partner and I could handle it without much of an issue. The bed does weigh 131 pounds, though, so I wouldn’t recommend trying to move it alone.

The assembly was very simple. There are very few tiny parts, the lift system is easy to understand and put together, and the frame assembly is intuitive. It probably only took 20 to 30 minutes to assemble.

Are there any standout features? The gas lift system makes things so simple. My mattress is quite heavy, but the nylon handle and gas lift let me hoist it up and hold it open while I rummage below without too much trouble. I wouldn’t want to spend much time under the open mattress without someone to help, though. It’s doable but not comfortable.

What’s your bedroom design, and how does this storage bed align with your aesthetic? Currently, the bedroom is set up quite minimally, with just the storage bed, a rug, and an end table on each side of the mattress. I opted for the beige modern version of the bed (there are 14 options total: seven colorways and two design options), which looks great with my light blue rug. It looks great as a standalone piece but could also accommodate a bench or low couch at the foot of the bed. That would, however, block the opening to the storage underneath, so it would depend on how often the underbed storage would need to be accessed. I think the best part of the frame is that it takes up a good amount of space without being excessive, allowing for a good variety of bedroom setup options.

Did the bed frame live up to your expectations? Considering that the frame costs less than $300, it has exceeded my expectations so far. The gas lift makes it easy to access the underbed storage, the headboard is simple, comfortable, and the ideal height, and the frame is surprisingly sturdy. The storage is ample and the design is versatile. It’s easy to see myself using this frame for a long time.

How would you rate the sturdiness of this bed frame on a scale of 1–10? Eight.

Would you recommend this bed frame to a friend? I definitely would, especially if they’re after underbed storage that doesn’t require daily access. The space underneath is vast and versatile, and the headboard is stylish and easy to design around.

The Best Wooden Storage Bed

Ikea Songesand Bed Frame with Storage

Specs

  • Sizes available: Full/double, queen
  • Colors available: Brown, white
  • Storage type: Four underbed storage drawers
  • Materials: Particleboard, Paper foil, Plastic edging
  • Weight capacity: N/A

Bed frame reviewer: Julia Harrison, commerce writer

What attracted you to this bed frame? I desperately needed storage solutions for my room, as it’s a small space with a tiny closet, and I’m constantly accruing clothing, candles, and have-to-have tchotchkes.

What was the delivery and assembly like? I got this off Facebook Marketplace, and I took the parts up individually though and found the assembly was definitely a two-person job, and slightly challenging. The drawers, however, were super easy—they really just slide right under the bed, no drawer glide mounting necessary.

Are there any standout features? The amount of storage it can hold is super impressive. I have a Queen-size and it handles storing my whole out-of-season wardrobe, as well as all my childhood notebooks, photo albums and every card I’ve ever received since I was eight—plus, all the candles I’ve yet to review.

What’s your bedroom design, and how does this storage bed align with your aesthetic? The aesthetic is somewhere between bohemian and Bauhaus, if you can imagine that. The bed frame doesn’t really incorporate into the style, but serves as a really sturdy backdrop to my bedding and the headboard adds a nice, grown-up touch.

Did the bed frame live up to your expectations? It does! My bed frame expectations are fairly minimal—don’t break. I’ve found that a bamboo bed frame isn’t capable of meeting that expectation, but even though I was wary of the particleboard’s durability, I’ve had no issues with it.

How would you rate the sturdiness of this bed frame on a scale of 1–10?
Eight, just because I can see a world in which the particleboard breaks down.

Would you recommend this bed frame to a friend?
It's not the most design-friendly, but I would recommend it for storage purposes!

How We Tested the Best Storage Beds

To truly give our recommendations on the best storage beds, we featured options that include a variety of price points, storage features, designs, and more to guide you on your own shopping journey. Read more on the key factors we assessed below:

Delivery and Assembly: The last thing you want is to wait months for your bed frame to help you organize—and elevate—your space. We selected options that offer reasonable shipping windows (usually within one month from placing your order to its arrival to your home) as well as white glove delivery to help set up the storage bed in your desired room.

Design: A big passion of ours at AD is finding furniture that is not only functional but is also not an eyesore. We skipped clunky bed frames and included on-trend options that can seamlessly sit anywhere from a modern to minimalist bedroom.

Size: While all of the storage beds we featured in this story are queen sizes, we looked for picks that come in a range of sizes to accommodate any space. Keep in mind that storage beds often have features like pull-out drawers and hydraulic under-bed storage, so be sure to measure your space and compare it to your desired storage bed’s dimensions to ensure the bed can open properly in your bedroom.

Storage Features: The storage bed you select should align with your space. If you’re tight on floorspace, consider a storage bed that lifts up. If you have low ceilings, consider a storage bed that has drawers underneath.

  • Hydraulic System: A hydraulic storage bed system boasts a lift-up design, usually with one or two straps to grab hold of. Be sure to check the size of your mattress before making your purchase, as many hydraulic storage beds have size and weight limit requirements.
  • Underbed Drawers: Underbed drawers often come built into a storage bed’s design on the front and/or the side of the bed. Like the Thuma storage drawers, some brands sell drawers separately as ideal add-ons to tuck underneath a platform bed.

Durability: We tested storage beds by sleeping on them night after night, taking notice of any factors like creakiness or wobbliness. We also looked for options with high-quality materials like fine upholstery and solid wood that are designed to last.

Price: Most storage beds range anywhere from $200 to $2,000. While the price isn’t always the biggest indicator of its quality, materials like bouclé and solid wood are usually available in more high-end storage beds.

FAQs

What are the different types of storage beds?

Hydraulic beds: Also called an “ottoman bed,” this is a model where the mattress base lifts up with the aid of hydraulic lifts, or gas lifts that use pressurized gas that uses guided force to help with heavy lifts. This typically offers the most room out of the storage bed options.

Drawer beds: Fairly self-explanatory: drawers (either under, alongside, or at the foot of the bed) are this frame’s storage approach.

Headboard storage beds: A headboard storage bed draws from mid-century styles, where built-in shelves or nightstands create storage opportunities. This is a good option if what you need to store is also aesthetically pleasing.

Cubby beds: Instead of drawers, these cubbies are open shelving solutions underneath the bed frame, particularly suitable for holding books if you’re looking for a stylish way to create a bedroom library.

What’s a “hydraulic lift” in a storage bed?

When your storage bed has interior storage—in other words, when you lift your bed from the bottom upwards to access its storage—it requires something called a “hydraulic lift” to make it possible for you to lift the bed without breaking your back, and keep the slatted frame upright while you lift your items in and out. If your storage bed has interior storage and no hydraulic lift, you will collapse yourself and ultimately be pancaked by your own sleep-and-store investment.

What features should I look for in the best storage beds?

A good storage bed, in our opinion, doesn’t look like a storage bed. It looks like a regular bed. It’s crafted from, ideally, kiln-dried hardwood, it has a slatted base so you don’t need to bother with a box spring, and it has non-sticky drawers (thank you, Thuma) or a hydraulic lift to help with the lifting of interior storage (thank you, Saatva). Look for a solid wood base, linen upholstery, and invest in some vacuum-sealed bags. Commerce writer Julia Harrison lives by these.

What materials make a good storage bed?

You’re primarily searching for durability and space in storage bed models. Look for something made from solid wood for accountable and long-lasting materials. Hydraulic lifts are a sign of thoughtful storage engineering, and make storage accessible without back-breaking exercises. While the upholstered bed type is a current and trendy favorite, make sure what lies beneath the textile is also going to stand the test of time.
