Best Minimalist Modular Sofa

You can go as big or as small as you’d like with the Jonathan Chaise Sectional from Castlery, a modular option that starts as a two-seater and builds out into a larger configuration that can accommodate up to six. “This sofa is incredibly comfortable and feels very well-made,” AD commerce director Rachel Fletcher says in her review. “I’d actually say it’s closer to my mattress in terms of firmness—medium firm to firm—which I very much appreciate. It’s not the kind of sofa you’re going to sink into quicksand style, and there’s absolutely no sagging on this one.

The minimal silhouette of this low-slung sofa works great for a more understated space but could easily appeal to a household with kids and pets as well. “Castlery does offer swatches and fabric samples, but I went all in without testing first and wasn’t sure what a polyester blend might feel like,” she adds. “Thankfully, it’s very soft! It’s made to resemble wool, without the itch or stiffness, and the heathered fabric makes it look expensive; it should also help hide stains.”

The Cozey Neptune is a modular sofa that’s a jack of all trades: It can be assembled in less than half an hour, pulls out into a sleeper in two minutes flat, has hidden storage under the cushions, and the performance fabrics won’t make you cry over spilled liquids (if you’re the messy type). Contributor Yelena Moroz Alpert chose the sofa for all those reasons, but it was the easy-to-transport pieces that made the Neptune such a keeper. “I had no problem bringing it into the basement,” she says in her review, despite some tight angles on the landing. “Anyone who lives in a walk-up, has a tight stairway, or narrow doorways typical of older homes will love this piece.”

Once fully assembled, it proved to be as durable as it is good-looking, especially if you’re in the market for furniture that treads the line between minimalism and down-to-earth. “I am very skeptical of couches with cushions on the back because I know that these can collapse, and that will drive me crazy,” Alpert explains. “This back is tightly upholstered, but it comes with three lumbar cushions that have a nice spring to them.” She’s had it for almost two months now and it looks pristine, even with nearly daily use of two school-age kids (and their friends) who use it as video game central.

The Neptune also converts into a full-size sleeper sofa (Alpert recommends springing for the brand’s Sleep Kit, which includes a topper, fitted sheet, flat sheet, two pillows and pillowcases, and comforter for $270.)
