The through line among the many wildly different projects in this issue is a balance of both virtuosity and ease. That makes perfect sense in this annual celebration of the AD100—each talent is at the top of their game, doing what they do best and doing it their way. Take the pair of covers: The legendary Frank Gehry tears it up in Silicon Valley with a sculptural, eye-popping private residence that proves his singular vision and powers continue to astonish, while in Manhattan Alexandra and Michael Misczynski of Atelier AM show their signature prowess with sublime restraint and quiet luxury. Britt Moran and Emiliano Salci, the Milanese masters of Dimorestudio, give a classic London flat their trademark moody and cinematic Italian touch, while Heidi Caillier teams up with Kendall Jenner to create a quirky, colorful mountain retreat that reveals another facet of the design-obsessed supermodel’s lifestyle and aesthetic.
Remy Renzullo, who debuts on the AD100 list this year, shows off a lovely Brooklyn town house he painstakingly refined with a considered eye for antiques and art over seven years for a young family. The landscape architect Sara Zewde expertly tackles the rooftop garden of the Studio Museum in Harlem’s new building, creating more than simple beauty: “Gardens aren’t just something to look at,” observes Zewde. “They’re important to how communities evolve and social movements happen.” In Aspen, and at the iconic Sea Ranch in Northern California, AD100 regulars Frances Merrill of Reath Design and Commune Design, respectively, craft interiors that are in harmony with their exceptional locations. And sometimes the best client is oneself: Designer Young Huh shares her family’s Hudson Valley farmhouse, a delightful mix of romantic cottagecore and Korean heritage that could only belong to her. Personal bests, one and all.
